Something about Snow

The cold season is here, we’ve already had a little bit of snow, and I look like a burst sofa cushion. That’s what the Hoomans say. Well, I just put my hair up and I’m warm. People buy artificial fur for a lot of money and have to heat their houses to 25 degrees to make it nice and cozy. I always say: these people are strange animals.

I think snow is great, it makes everything so exciting when you go hunting mice.

Suddenly everything is quiet outside because the snow absorbs the sound, and I can hear the mice rustling and squeaking under the blanket of snow much better.

And then, when I think I have something, I jump up as if catapulted by a spring and ……….

……. caught something. Sometimes just old dog poop from Hooman’s dogs. Man, they’re gross.

Recently I even built a snowman, yes.

Well, maybe I just dreamed about it because I saw a snowman. That thing was large!

It was so wonderful in the snow. On the one hand, it makes everything very bright and quiet, beautiful. But if you listen really carefully, you can actually hear the snow falling. Now don’t look at me like that, that’s true! It’s almost as loud as breathing. Just listen really carefully……..

Recently I was talking to my fox friends about snow and they said that the snow in the Arctic looks completely different. That’s because of the temperature. Here in Siegerland it’s beautiful crystals, in the Arctic it’s more like plates. Yes, that’s what my cousin from Alaska says. Every snowflake probably has its own name there because they know hundreds of names for snow, I’d say.

But that’s nonsense too, says my cousin. The Inuit have two words for snow: “aput” for the snow that is currently falling and “qanik” for the snow on the ground. Everything else is related to it: snowstorm, snowdrift, snow dune, harsh snow, powder snow… in principle they know as many words for snow as other people. But if you don’t know someone, you just make something up to make it really special. There’s a lot of rubbish said about us foxes, but I’ll come to that later.

I’m going to go and look for a really nice snowflake now. Maybe I’ll show you… wow, look here…

Bye
